What's coming for Sitefinity 3.6

Sitefinity Box We're going to see one more incremental release of Sitefinity before the big 4.0 release (announcement #1, announcement #2).  Sitefinity 3.6 is currently scheduled to be released January/February 2009.  This is a minor release, but there are some interesting features being included.

New Features List

  • Support for .NET 3.5 - there will also be a .NET 2.0 release of Sitefinity 3.6
  • Embedded ControlTemplates - this will drastically reduce the # of files included in Sitefinity.
  • Hierarchical categories.
  • Latest version of RadControls for AJAX
  • Data provider for video libraries using Amazon S3 for storage.
  • .NET 3.5 version will include RadControls for Silverlight
  • .NET 3.5 version will handle video content using RadMediaPlayer for Silverlight
  • Data provider for video libraries stored using Amazon S3.

I'm personally very excited about the embedded ControlTemplates.  A fresh installation of Sitefinity consists of almost 7,000 files.  Deploying, upgrading and managing all of these files is sometimes a challenge.  With Sitefinity 3.6 all of these files, by default, will be embedded in the assembly.  If you wish to customize these files, you can extract them.  Otherwise, they will remain embedded & hidden.  This will make it a lot easier to manage our customizations to Sitefinity.

This will be the last version of Sitefinity to include support for .NET 2.0.  Sitefinity 4.0 will only support .NET 3.5.  Some of the new features planned for upcoming versions of Sitefinity require features not found in .NET 2.0.

We'll have some nice new features to play with after the new year.

Still no dynamic links! So Sitefinity is still not a Content MANAGMENT System. Its still just a Content ENTRY System. Very sad to hear that.

Hey Clayton, Dynamic Hyper Link controls are already dynamic. I tested the heck out of them last week. In fact, I had this very conversation with Slavo & Ivan. Links created through RadEditor are, however, still static. As I understand it, this feature is nearly completed. The team will try to make it part of the 3.6 release. However, they are not entirely sure it will be completed and thus it was not included on the features list. Be patient though, we'll have this feature soon enough. I have some URL rewriting tips coming next week which might help in the meantime.

With Embedded ControlTemplates features coming how would I deal with this: Administrator logs in - gets full html editor when editing content. Anybody else logs in - gets a cutdown html editor (removing fonts etc, to force stylesheets). We did a hack on existing one but with the embedded stuff coming just want to make sure i've got a heads up.
